I. The Current Development
The overall development layout for the electronic information manufacturing industry, one of Guangzhou’s pillar industries, has come into being in the city, with Guangzhou Science City as the core base and Huadu District, Nansha District, Panyu District, Conghua City and Zengcheng City as the supporting areas. A variety of industry clusters involving flat panel displays, digital home appliances, computers and computer peripherals, photo-electronic devices, communication terminal equipment, mobile telecommunication terminal equipment, home audio-visual equipment and integrated circuit. Guangzhou has been recognized by related state authorities as the National Electronic Information Industry Base and the National Innovation Pilot City.
In 2009,the electronic product manufacturers above the designated size in the city actualized the output value of RMB 133.406 billion yuan, up by 32.1 percent, and their contribution rate to the growth of industries above the designated size reached 38.7 percent. Relevant industries have gained strong development momentum. In 2009, Guangzhou software and information service enterprises numbered more than 2,000, with the annual income of over RMB 100 billion yuan. Efforts to build Guangzhou into a wireless city have been made in an all round way. The city’s wireless portal with the theme of “Intelligence Guangzhou” has been launched. The annual E-commerce trade volume amounted to RMB 360 billion yuan with an increase rate of 23 percent year on year.
Guangzhou has attracted a huge number of large-scale multinational enterprises like LG and Lite On Technology Corporation as well as some independent-branded enterprises including Wanbao Electronic Appliance Corporation and Radio Group, to contribute to the rapid development of the electronic information manufacturing industry in Guangzhou. A number of projects concerning electronic components and photo-electricity have been brought in Guangzhou. For example, Guangzhou Jinli Electronics Corporation established by Japan-based Hitachi, South Koreabased LGD will set up the project of LGD 8.5 generation LCD production with an estimated investment of USD 4 billion in total. The LCD flat panel display module project of LG Display has brought eight supporting projects into the city with an estimated output value of nearly RMB 100 billion yuan.
Guangzhou has set up a few research and development institutions and technique supporting platforms for electronic information products and ranked the top in the country in terms of both the technology innovation ability in the electronic information industry and the technical capability. Great breakthroughs have been made in a variety of technological fields including the new generation mobile telecommunication equipment, integrated circuit design, digital audio and 3G digital home appliances. The city’s standards for digital home appliances have been recognized as national and even international industrial standards.
II Development Priorities
Priority should be given to three industries with high growth potentials, namely those of flat panel displays, new generation wireless broadband communication and modern information service-Industries of strategic importance like integrated circuit should be developed with great efforts. Emphasis should also be laid on the advancing of digital home appliances industries with high growth potentials which incorporate 4C, namely computer, communication, consumer electronics and content. Industries of photo-electronic devices, communication terminal equipment, mobile telecommunication terminal equipment, home audio-visual appliances and computer manufacturing should be further strengthened. And, the industrial upgrade and extension of industry chain should be promoted.
