Guangzhou's metro operator recently announced plans to adjust the city's metro system network in preparation for the construction of the second airport in Guangzhou. On December 5, the metro operator began inviting proposals for the optimization of the metro network. The project is expected to facilitate the development of Nansha New District, the International Financial City and other key areas and cost RMB13.95 million. In addition, the project will result in fine-tuning and optimization of the original metro network. 

According to the bidding documents, officials are currently selecting a site for the construction of another airport in Guangzhou. The new airport is expected to become another major integrated transport hub in the city; as such, the adjustment of the metro network needs to take into consideration the connection to the new airport. 

Media reports indicate that a site in Dagang Township of Nansha has been tentatively identified for the planned new airport. As there is no existing metro station at Dagang, the metro network may be extended to this area if the new airport is actually based here. The extension of the metro system to Dagang is expected to boost local transport capacity.
