Guangzhou municipal government officials held a conference on commerce on the morning of March 6. At the conference, commerce officials took stock of last year's work and made arrangements for this year's work. Vice Mayor Luo Weifeng attended the conference and made a speech. Officials announced five action plans and five major projects for this year's commerce work. They will concentrate on the introduction of foreign investment and intellectual power, enhancement of the functions of Guangzhou as a modern capital of commerce, development of new forms of business, creation of a pilot free trade zone, and construction of the International Trade Center and the International Convention and Exhibition Center. Commerce officials predict that this year's total retails in the city will grow by 10.5%, total foreign trade will rise 10%, actual utilized foreign investment will go up 10%, and outward foreign investment will surge 20%.
Last year, Guangzhou recorded total foreign trade of $130.6 billion, accounting for 1/33 of the nation's total sum, up 9.8%, higher than the national average (3.4%) and the provincial average (-1.4%). The new forms of business became fresh bright spots in foreign trade, with imports and exports through bonded trade, leasing trade, market procurements and other means jumping almost 100% to hit $22.7 billion. This amount represented 17.4% of the city's total foreign trade, up 7.8 percentage points from last 2013. In 2014, Guangzhou drew contracted foreign investment of $8.04 billion, up 13%, and attracted actual utilized foreign investment of $5.11 billion, up 6.3%, accounting for 1/23 of the nation's total. Also in 2014, Guangzhou's outward investment deals jumped 62.3% to $3.25 billion, with investment from the Chinese side shooting up 70.7% to $3.1 billion. |
