Guangzhou Enters Era of “Service Economy” ............................................................................................................................................................................ |

Over the past five years, Guangzhou's annual GDP has exceeded 1 trillion yuan, becoming the first semi-provincial-level city in China to have an economy in excess of 1 trillion yuan. The city's total financial revenues over the past five years also surpassed a trillion yuan and accounted for about 30 percent of the province's sum total. The city's total investment in fixed assets over the past five years broke through the 1 trillion yuan mark to hit 1.1 trillion, with retails exceeding 2 trillion yuan. The city's status as the center of commerce and trade has also been further consolidated, with imports and exports surpassing US$ 100 billion, averaging an increase of US$10 billion yuan over the past five years.
These significant figures were announced by Pan Jianguo, Director of the Guangzhou Development and Reform Commission on January 19.
At present, agriculture, industry and service account for 1.6%, 37.4% and 61% of the city's economy, respectively, compared with 2.5%, 39.7% and 57.8%, respectively, at the end of the 10th Five-Year Plan period. The service sector contributes more than 60% of the city's GDP growth, and employs over 17 million people, almost half of the city's total workforce. The added value of the modern service industries, including banking, retailing and wholesaling, accommodation and catering, lease and business service, and cultural industries, has nearly doubled since the end of the 10th Five-Year Plan period. This indicates that Guangzhou now has a service-dominated economic structure, signifying the advent of an era of "service economy" in Guangzhou.
Since the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" issued by Guangzhou Municipality, its urban and rural residents' incomes have witnessed average annual growth rates in excess of double-digits, respectively amounting to 10.8% and 11.8%, nearly doubling those of the "Tenth Five-Year". |
