First Wholly Hong Kong-Owned Clinic Opens in Guangzhou

On Nov. 23rd, the Hong Kong Wanzhi Medical and Health Center was unveiled in Tianhe District. Established under the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), it represents the first wholly Hong Kong-invested clinic in Guangzhou. The clinic is geared toward the objective of bringing premium medical services of Hong Kong style to Guangzhou residents. However, prices of those services are set according to Hong Kong standards with no consideration given to the average income level on the mainland. For instance, an ordinary health checkup costs some 600 Yuan. Owners of the clinic said that their clinic was basically oriented toward Hong Kong people living in Guangzhou and Guangzhou residents at a high income level.
Ji Kuanle, a famous Hong Kong cardiologist is one of the owners of the clinic. As Dr. Ji remarked, the clinic covers an area of 240 square meters and consists of four consulting rooms, each supervised by one specialist with a Hong Kong medical license. Major departments of the clinic include a cardiovascular department, a digestive department, an endocrine department and a gerontology department. Medical consultations and ordinary checkups are offered at the clinic, and clinical operations are not available for the time being.
Dr. Ji said that many Guangzhou residents had a good impression of doctors from Hong Kong and that residents with deep pockets had frequently travelled to Hong Kong for high-end checkups and therapy.
Under the arrangement of CEPA, Guangdong is a designated province for the implementation of pilot projects and policies. One of those policies is to encourage medical practitioners from Hong Kong and Macao to set up medical service organizations in Guangdong, so that a variety of quality medical services are available to mainland residents. At present, six clinics independently owned by Hong Kong and Macao practitioners have been opened in Guangdong, the Hong Kong Wanzhi Medical and Health Center included. Located in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhongshan and Shunde, five of those clinics are invested by Hong Kong practitioners. |
