Guangzhou to Serve as One of World's Leading Cities in Five Years' Time

The Tenth Guangzhou Party Representatives' Congress was opened on December 24th, 2011. Wan Qingliang, the newly inaugurated Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee Secretary, delivered a work-in-progress report on behalf of the Ninth Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee. The report entitled Endeavors to Build a Happy Guangzhou in the Principles of Scientific Development Outlook and Administering for People clearly states the desired strategic guidelines for Guangzhou's development over the next five years. He summarized the intended future development path of Guangzhou as being that of a new urban development path that is characterized by the creation of a low-carbon economy, intelligent city, civilized society, beautiful ecological environment, integrated urban and rural areas and happy life.
Wan Qingliang further stated that in the next five years Guangzhou will spare no efforts to attain its goals of development and that the Guangzhou Municipal Government will strive to build a happy Guangzhou by establishing this city as a national central city and will take the lead in such a restructuring. Besides this set of tasks Guangzhou will also focus on two major strategies. Namely, the developing the city into one of the most significant international commercial and trade centers and in tandem with this to be regarded as an equally significant world-class cultural city.
To this end, Wan Qingliang stated Guangzhou needs to focus on and adhere to three urban development concepts which can best be described as the trinity of the principal urban development concepts which integrates a low-carbon economy, with being an intelligent city and its citizens enjoying a happy life. Additionally, the city also aims to make three key breakthroughs, including strategic infrastructure construction, strategic leading industries and strategic development platform construction. Moreover, efforts will also be made to accomplish eight projects, such as industrial upgrading project, scientific innovation project, urban and rural integration project, ecological and environmental protection project, cultural guidance project, talent converging project, livelihood and welfare project and party construction innovation project.
Further the conference was able to release appealing information, which does place Guangzhou in the position of being one of the world's leading cities within such a projected time frame by noting the fact that by 2016 the GDP of Guangzhou will exceed two trillion RMB. In addition, the added values of the emerging tertiary and strategic industries will account for a much larger proportion of the city's GDP. |
