The Guangzhou Comprehensive Transportation Hub Plan (2018-2035) was recently published, revealing that the city will make efforts to become a global transportation hub by 2035, making travelling in and out of the city ever more convenient.

According to the plan, the city will practically have achieved international transportation hub status next year. In the future, people will be able to fly from Guangzhou to most cities around the world within 12 hours; with direct access to the high speed railway network, including express services between cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

This infrastructure development includes aviation, railway and highway networks, some specific requirements are as follows:

At present Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport serves 87 international destinations, which is less than airports in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, Baiyun Airport will develop more international routes.

Next year, the airport will start the construction of its third phase expansion project and Terminal 3. By 2035, it is projected to have an annual handling capacity of up to 140 million passengers, the number of international destinations will increase to 190 with an international air passenger transfer rate of more than 35%.

Moreover, 10 railway stations will serve the 7 districts across the city. Services at Guangzhou Railway Station and Guangzhou East Railway Station will be integrated and upgraded to Guangzhou Central Railway Station, serving the central urban area of Guangzhou.

Regarding passenger transit, the city is planning to set up two poles: with Xintang and Zengcheng Stations as the ‘East Pole’ and Nansha Cruise Port and Nansha Station as the ‘Nansha or South Pole’. They will be linked with Greater Bay Area cities through highways, urban rail lines and metro.
