Guangzhou is a rapidly-developing millennial metropolis in South China, filled with interesting cultural, historical, and natural landmarks.
Here are some of the city's top attractions for visitors.
Culture and History:
Chen Clan Academy (also the Guangdong Provincial Museum of Folk Art, located near the Chen Clan Academy metro stop in west 'old town'): This elegant centurial compound boasts exquisite local architecture and beautiful landscaping as well as a large selection of fine folk art, including ivory, brick and wood carvings, famous Canton embroidery and works of porcelain. (About 2 hours is required for a full tour)
Nanyue Royal Tomb Museum (south of Liuhua Trade Center): Home to many precious antiques and ancient tomb relics from previous Guangzhou-based kingdoms, this is an excellent spot to learn about the city's history. (2 hours for tour)
Xiguan Residential Communities (in west old town): These are neighborhoods lined with examples of typical Cantonese 'Qilou' residences, found mainly on Shangxia Jiu Lu and Fengyuan Lu in Liwan District. (2-3 hours walk across blocks)
Dongshan Area (south of the Dongshankou metro stop): This stylish area features many Western style houses in peaceful communities, plus a selection of trendy bars and clubs housed in renovated old buildings. (1.5-2 hours walk across blocks)
Shamian Island (in west old town): Once a foreign concession, this elegant and diversified 'oasis' in Guangzhou offers a marriage of graceful architecture, botanical abundance, art galleries, and a comfortable mix of history with modern life. (2 hours)
Guangzhou Restaurant (in west old town): In our renowned 'City of Food,' this celebrated eatery serves classic local delicacies amidst traditional Cantonese décor for a delicious and authentic culinary experience. (1.5 - 2 hours)
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (beside the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall metro stop): The opulent architecture and landscaping of this hallowed location commemorate the great Dr. Sun Yat-sen of Guangdong, China's 'Father of the Republic Revolution.' Used frequently for special concerts and performances, it's just south of Yuexiu Hill on the city's traditional axis. (1.5 hours)
Huangpu Military Academy (on the eastern outskirt): Located near a Chinese naval port, this is the country's first modern military school, and one of those cornerstone institutions that substantially influenced China's history. Many great Chinese military and political dignitaries taught or studied there, making it a strong attraction for those interested in China's long military history. (1.5 hours)
Xiaozhou Village (on the southern outskirt): This romantic local hideaway features an intricate maze of ancient alleys and canals (it has been called Guangzhou's 'Little Venice'), rustic village architecture, regional folkways and a growing presence of local artists. (3 hours)
Yuexiu Hill (beside the Yuexiu Park metro stop): This favorite local park features several major Cantonese symbols, including the Statue of the Five Rams, the Guangzhou Museum, and the treasured historic stadium. (3 hours)
Guangxiao Temple (in west old town, near the Ximenkou metro stop): One of Guangzhou's most famous and highly-rated ancient Buddhist temples, Guangxiao's sacred architecture creates an empowering atmosphere for your prayers and offerings. The landscape and vegetarian food are also appealing. (1.5 hours)
Sacred Heart Cathedral (in central old town): Beautiful and well preserved, this is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South China, nestled deep inside a busy wholesale grocery market. (1 hour)
Huaisheng Mosque (also called 'Guang Ta', in west old town): The earliest mosque on the Chinese mainland and a sacred place for Muslims in and around Guangzhou. (30 minutes)
People's Park (in central old town on the city's axis, near the metro stop of Gongyuanqian): The green and basic heartland of leisure for the locals – singing, dancing, strolling, tending birds, playing sports, and many other fun activities can be joined or watched there. (30 minutes)
Nature:
Pearl River Cruise: As the largest river in South China, the Pearl River is the 'Mother River' of Guangzhou. A charming one-hour cruise on it may be a most romantic way to enjoy the appealing city views. On the water you get a refreshingly different and open panorama of the city; the picturesque and diversified waterfronts and river views are a feast for the senses during the day, at sunset, or at night. It's perfect to catch your breath away from the crowds on land.
Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain (on the northern outskirt): This large and picturesque mountain north of downtown is a favorite local escape into nature, featuring gorgeous views of the city, scenic valleys, hiking paths, a spring, an ancient temple, and an 'extreme sport' site. (At least half a day)
Lianhua (Lotus) Mountain (on the southern outskirt): This beautiful natural landmark overlooks the mouth of the Pearl River as it meets the sea. Its ancient quarry, barracks, fort, pagoda and Buddhist buildings are must-sees. (At least half a day)
Others:
Qingping Market Blocks (in west old town, beside Huangsha metro stop): There is a magnitude of merchandise available all across Guangzhou, but the Qingping markets are the most interesting. With their wide selection of agricultural products, pets, antiques, artifacts, Traditional Chinese Medicines and groceries, you might get lost and overwhelmed in the lively atmosphere. Nearby there is also a large wholesale seafood market, where you can buy fresh seafood and have it prepared at one of the restaurants there. (2-3 hours)
Beijing Lu (central old town): This historic pedestrian street is a local favorite for shopping and dining, widely regarded as a fun, dynamic and cost-effective choice. Nearby Qilou buildings and ancient pavements add cultural flavor to the experience. (2 hours)
Ersha Island (in east new town): A privileged, peaceful and spacious island, Ersha is home to the city's top art museum, as well as a music hall, waterfront promenade and many upscale villas. (2 hours)
East Railway Station Square (in east new town, in front of East Railway Station): Located in the modern Tianhe CBD (Central Business District) and surrounded by premium office towers such as the CITIC Plaza, the Square features a beautiful artificial waterfall and many nearby dining and night life options. (1 hour)
